Liivalaia Cable Park is a pocket park focusing on spatial and material interim use. The starting point of the project was the revitalization of the area along one of the city’s central traffic routes, Liivalaia Street, in order to offer a more pleasant spatial experience to those entering Veerenni district. The park’s design concept is focused on the underground infrastructure as a set of invisible factors that steer urban design and often set obstacles and constraints to the improvement of the quality of urban space. That is why the location of the utility lines is also marked on the pavement.

The solution consists of seven beds with their shape stemming from the area between the paths of the utilities. Three of them rise above the ground by means of gabions, while the four lower beds are milled into the pavement and surrounded with bed edgings of various shapes. The selection of plant species was partly inspired by alvar communities, with preference given to species of natural appearance and high pollination value. To increase drought resistance, a method was tested where the top layer of the soil is mixed with crushed stone used as mulch.

Reused materials:

  1. Trellis for climbers: window bars from the former Liivalaia Court House
  2. Concrete stepping stones: former paving stones from the Old Town
  3. Granite bed edging: curb stones from roadworks in Tallinn
  4. Gabion filling (limestone): excavation waste from Fahle District
