Creating a new and user-friendlier outdoor area around Terminal D of the Old City Harbour was a weighty task. The completed project is not merely a reconstructed harbour area but bears a new quality in the urban space. The lush and cosy area is a place to stop and spend time even if you do not intend to board a ship.
The concept is based on the winning competition entry inspired by a ship, a port and other nautical elements. The area is divided by the promenade leading from the pedestrian bridge towards Reidi Road, with the Terminal D service area located to the north and the leisure area in front of the commercial buildings to the south. The sea-themed landmarks of the initial concept include the rigging-lights on the square in front of the terminal, beacon-like information boards at the main hubs, and the outdoor stage inspired by sea-containers. It is worth noting also the markings of historical objects as water features – the Tarn Kiln Building and the Girard Canal. Canopies in the bus and taxi park protect from the weather, while the terraced pavilion near the Tar Kiln Square allows for more elevated views.

The landscaping solution makes use of a diverse plant palette that can withstand sea winds, salt spray and drought. There are rows of trees along the promenade and the road, with the “waves” of bushes, perennials and grasses of different height adding further dynamism to the landscaping, while the various conifers preserve greenery throughout the year.
